45_Incoming Signals: The New Glitterati

Posted in Incoming Signals tagged , at 2:30 pm by kidbrother

_I found it! It turns out it wasn’t that hard, cause my brother had the link on his blogroll the whole time, but I still feel proud of myself. The link I was looking for was, of course, the link to my friend Lindsay’s blog The New Glitterati.

_Lindsay is a chicklit writer. Chicklit writers are like a rare breed of exotic birds that live off of Ketel One. Everyone knows that they’re out there, getting drunk and writing hysterically self-depricating posts about how they got drunk and what they did while they were drunk, but when does anyone ever meet them?

_Well I have. And she’s cool. And she can write. And she has a blog, which I present to you in order to fill that chicklit shaped hole in your life.

23_Incoming Signals: Beatbots

Posted in Incoming Signals tagged , at 2:17 pm by kidbrother

_Baltimore is a bit of a strange town when it comes to the arts. Take music for instance. Baltimore has the charm and quirk to be home to an amazingly eclectic and interesting music scene and it for some reason is not. Most of the bands around here are borring and simplistic 90s style jam bands or fusion bands who market to the 99.1 crowd. Even worse, most of the highschool bands, the next generation, are just as borring.

_So, it’s refreshing to find the very awesome and interesting contemporary media outlet that is Beatbots. This site offers a large selection of prose, poetry and other features from a staff of contributors that are all relatively young (mostly 20 somethings) and relatively local (mostly D.C. and Baltimore and the surrounding areas). I haven’t gotten a chance to read through the prose section from front to back, but I will say it’s a shame that Christie Church only has two stories up. She’s wonderful.

_Now that you have a place to start reading on the site, one more interesting fact: it’s really really easy to join. All you need to do is send in three pieces of media and let them decide if you’re right for the site. Anyone else interested? I know I am…

20_Incoming Signals: Bookslut

Posted in Incoming Signals tagged , at 3:55 pm by kidbrother

_Today’s Incoming Signals is for anyone who wants a lot to read, both on the screen and off it. Bookslut is a Chicago based blog about, well, books. Jessa Crispin, who runs the show, has a blog that is updated daily, but also puts out massive amounts of reviews and interviews on a monthly basis. There are also contributed columns and essays with topics that range from Valentine’s Day books for kids to the best graphic novels of the year to some rather intellectual looks at poetic styles and so on. If you love reading, and love reading about reading, you’ll love Bookslut.

11_Incoming Signals: Exploring…York?

Posted in Incoming Signals tagged , at 10:31 pm by kidbrother

_I know, I’m shocked too. There’s things to see in York, Pennsylvania? Fascinating! But then again, there are things to see everywhere you go. And that’s what this week’s Incoming Signals is about.

_York Blog’s Explorer Blog is not only about traveling, but the things that matter to traveling, like ever increasing gas prices and cancelled flights. It’s not all holiday woe, though. Jen posts pictures of York county residents as they step foot outside into the real world and discover the wonders of things like food-not-cooked-in-lard. It’s a good read, will make you think about your travel plans and will make you laugh at the strange things people will put on signs.

08_Incoming Signals: No Media Kings

Posted in Incoming Signals tagged , at 2:37 pm by kidbrother

_I can’t take credit for finding this. Lee Future over at Literature Is Not Dead linked me to it.

_No Media Kings is an incredible resource for Indie publishing, movie making, whatever. Jim used to be at Harper Collins but seems to have realized that selling your soul to the devil is not fun. He also seems to have realized that there is no type of media he doesn’t like, as he has done movies, books, comic books, everything. It’s a great site and a good way to spend a lot of time avoiding something less cool, like, your job.

03_Incoming Signals

Posted in Incoming Signals tagged , , at 2:01 pm by kidbrother

_Some friends of mine have sent me links to their blogs.

_First, Literature Is Not Dead. If you like writing, it’s a blog for you. Lee Future/Mike Cook (this apparent case of identity confusion is explained) has a very wry voice when talking about everything from books and writing to the political/social ramifications of broom handles. He’s also been to Kyrgistan. When was the last time you read about someone going to Kyrgistan?

_Second, Can I Change A Life?. This blog relates Christian ideas and morals to pop-culture references like My Chemical Romance. It’s very smart stuff. Apparently Janet is also working on a book, but she’s never mentioned it before. If it’s like the blog it’s bound to be a good read.

_Third, Light And Storm. There is so much content on this blog it’s a bit hard to describe. Kristen runs a book/movie club off of it, picking books and movies that are more than just good reads, but have had an impact on the reader at some point or in some way. There are also pictures of really cool bugs and lectures about Kierkegaard. Unfortunately there is no explaination as to why Kierkegaard got so many vowels in his name.

_Finally, Switchfeed. This is primarily a Switchfoot fan blog, with lots of tour pictures and videos and such. Anyone who knows anything about Switchfoot knows that the band, especially their lead singer Jon, is about a lot more than just very decent music, and the blog follows suit. In between the Switchfoot reviews and interviews you can find stuff to make you think about religion and philosophy. It’s fun and smart, which is a dangerous combination.

All these links are in the Blogroll, as well as here.
