55_An Introduction of Sorts
Writing about yourself entails trying to find the perfect balance between being graciously accepting and self-deprecating – a balancing act I have yet to master. So when Kid asked me to write my own introduction to the blog, I hoped he was kidding, because I was intent on getting to read what he had to say about me, hoping it was something as witty as his ode to chicklit writer Lindsay, the “rare breed of exotic bird that lives off of Ketel One,” or as heartfelt as his insistence on letting Dennis Cass make us more awesome.
Unfortunately for me, he wasn’t kidding. And unfortunately for me again, he requested this from me in the middle of my making my way through a fourth bottle of champagne. Thus, I have no one to blame but alcoholic self for accepting the challenge.
At face value, my own blog will tell you a lot about what my writing is. Title? “Sometimes I Make Trouble Just For A Good Story.” About Me? “I’ve got a penchant for being snarky, but I comfort myself with the thought that maybe no one listens anyway, so no harm done.” My writing works along those lines. Every story I write is based on some version of the truth, and it’s my only hope that what I write somehow has as much value to me as it does to someone else. I can’t be the only girl in Baltimore who can reel off tales of drunken escapades involving the consmption of entire cases of champagne, affairs with doctors, and making walks of shame, traipsing to the car across the streets of Mt. Vernon in broad daylight wearing nothing but the Halloween getup of a Victoria’s Secret angel. (I’m keeping my fingers crossed at least one person reads this and acknowledges some sort of personal understanding with the aforementioned)
But there you go: a little self-indulgence, a little self-deprecation, and I suppose a little gracious acceptance of the offer from Kid to promote myself. Not a perfect balance, but it’ll come. Keep reading.

54_Food For Thought
_It’s good to be plugged back in. Between moving out of my apartment, working background on The Scene and preparing for my upcoming study abroad to South Africa, it’s been a busy month for us.
_All that business has got us at The Scene thinking about blogs and what they really do. For the most part, they are self indulgent and trite, either acting as public diaries or poor-man’s editorial pages for political commentary.
_But still, there are always some that are good. As food for thought, we’re going to show you some of the best.
_Personal blogs are always iffy. Our friend Lindsay at The New Glitterati runs a personal blog that keeps its head above soul-crushing self-pity. Another of our favorite personal blogs is that of Melissa Ruby, found here. Mellissa’s posts might be primarily concerned with her own life, but she handles herself with a poise and grace that is wonderful to read. Would-be personal bloggers would do well to check these out.
_Another of our favorites is the aptly named Dennis Cass Wants You To Be More Awesome, run by Dennis Cass himself. This indie blog focuses on ways to challenge the typical publishing industry and its outdated ways. With parables and responses to e-mail questions, Dennis has set up a blog that is helpful and professional, that also has a genuine personality to it. If you’re a blogger or a writer, DCWYTBMA is a very good resource to have.
